Congressman Jay Inslee Receives First-Ever Planning Advocate Award

Congressman Jay Inslee (D-WA) has a vision for what makes a livable community.  His efforts in Congress have provided funds to invest in mobility, safety and economic development in our state.    He has provided leadership and has partnered with local governments in smart transportation investments and community development.

Mr. Inslee has represented Washington State at the federal level for more than a decade – for the 4th Congressional District from 1992-1994, and the 1st Congressional District since 1999.  Washington's 1st Congressional District is described on Rep. Inslee's website as "a classic suburban district."  East of Lake Washington, the district contains portions of Redmond and all of Kirkland. It continues north through Woodinville, Bothell, Kenmore and Monroe. To the west, it includes Mukilteo, Mill Creek, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Shoreline and North Seattle. Crossing Puget Sound, the district encompasses Kingston, Poulsbo, Silverdale and Bainbridge Island.

In 2007, Rep. Inslee secured $2.5 million for the City of Shoreline to complete three miles of the Interurban Trail which connects Seattle to Everett. That project also built an iconic bicycle and pedestrian bridge across Aurora Avenue, a key feature of the multi-modal approach in this important regional transportation corridor. Congressman Inslee has also been an ardent supporter of the City's Aurora Avenue redevelopment project, helping secure $34 million. This project is a federal/state/local partnership in funding transit (the project has two dedicated bus lanes for bus rapid transit) and green infrastructure (it also has cutting edge rain gardens, and pervious pavement).

As a founder of the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Coalition, Congressman Inslee is advancing policies that support our local communities through clean energy innovation, creating green collar jobs, and protecting our nation's clean air, water and natural environment.
